Liz Cohen

I graduated from Brunel University with a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy in 1995 and gained a MSc Specialist Neurological Rehabilitation from The University of Birmingham in 2009. I worked for the NHS in Suffolk and Warwickshire for 9 years developing an interest in Neurology before spending a further 9 years teaching at The University of Birmingham. I then returned to a full-time clinical career in 2013 when my youngest started school.

More recently I have completed the APPI Pilates training including the exam and have since taken the Pilates for Neurology and Standing 3D modules which have directly fed into my classes and Physiotherapy treatments. A particular interest I have followed is in Myofascial Release (connective tissue mobilisation) by completing many MFR UK courses. My other speciality is in Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation which can be useful after orthopaedic surgery and in clients with foot drop and lack of movement following Stroke/MS and other neurological conditions. Do feel free to discuss these topics with me.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching my current classes and try to add a bit of variety and the odd challenge. With my Neuro and Medical background I developed the seated class to include those with mobility and neurological problems. With an aging population wanting to keep active I include a lot of weight and balance training, it is popular with those returning from orthopaedic surgeries and those who struggle on the floor.

When I am not working, I enjoy running, having taken this up after major knee surgery and worked steadily towards 5k, 10k and now my first ½ marathon in March 2019. This has been both a physical and psychological battle won after over 20 years of knee instability.  Pilates has played a massive role in my rehabilitation. I have two young children, one having just started secondary school which brings its own challenges so family time is important to me. I help run a local Girl Guide unit and enjoy crafting (beaded jewellery mainly) and making things (blinds etc) when I get a moment!
